A ‘flood map’ has been drawn using satellite images from the worst floods to hit the nation in the last five years to help the government come up with mitigation measures, writes Sonia Ramachandran

If you are thinking of buying your retirement home in idyllic Muar, the place of the famous "Mee Bandung", you might want to think again.

A UNIVERSITI Putra Malaysia (UPM) researcher laments the lack of a spatial thinking culture in Malaysia.

"This is related to the fact that we did away with Geography as a compulsory subject at the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia level," says Associate Professor Dr Abdul Rashid Mohamed Shariff from UPM's Engineering Faculty.

Geography was a compulsory subject in the 1970s at the Malaysian Certificate of Education level.
As a result, many students are not aware of the location of countries.

Geography Information System technology and its range of possible applications can address the spectre of unemployment as the global recession bites, writes MICHAEL SUN

PROFESSIONS utilising the Geography Information System (GIS) are still growing in a direction opposite to the economic downturn, says Associate Professor Dr Noordin Ahmad from the Engineering Faculty at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang.

The launch of the next satellite, RazakSat - upon which the GIS and Global Positioning System (GPS) technology depends -- will create a New Age economy of futuristic jobs which can address the spectre of unemployment as the global recession bites deep into Malaysia's export-driven economy.

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia will send into space the world's first remote sensing satellite to orbit the equator on April 21, providing high resolution images of Malaysia that can be used to provide information on land management, forestry and security.

The 190kg satellite, RazakSAT, which will orbit the equator every 100 minutes, will also be used to gather photographic data on resource development, conservation and fish migration.

Named after Malaysia's second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak, the satellite was developed by the Aeronautical Engineering Sdn Bhd (ATSB), a company under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. It will be launched using a US rocket named Falcon-1.
