DPM: Work closer on wildlife |

PUTRAJAYA: The deputy prime minister has called to heighten joint enforcement initiatives among state governments, the Wildlife Department and Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department to curb encroachment and poaching. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was one of the many steps needed to ensure the sound management and conservation of biodiversity. Effective measures would enable Malaysia to enjoy its rich biodiversity as a new source of wealth, he said in a statement yesterday after chairing the sixth National Biodiversity-Biotechnology Council, now renamed the National Biodiversity Council.
He said the council had agreed to expand the National Biodiversity Integrated Spatial Data Base Development Project to the whole peninsula (Phase 1) as well as pilot areas in Sabah and Sarawak (Phase 2). |

Express bus drivers will not get away with reckless driving and speeding once a national centre is set up to monitor express buses via satellite. The soon-to-be-established hub will operate like an air traffic control centre and track buses fitted with GPS (Global Positioning System) devices 24 hours a day.

GLOBALLY, many agriculture-based companies are profiting from the advanced computer-mapping technologies using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS).
Both systems are becoming more prominent in the agriculture world, assisting companies to increase revenues and reduce costs in activities like identifying suitable crops by location and season, optimising fertiliser and pesticide quantities, accurately projecting the yield of a particular crop and – the most exciting of all – enabling precision farming. |

RazakSAT to be operational in two months |

Malaysia’s second remote sensing satellite RazakSAT, launched into space on July 14, will be fully operational in two months. The satellite needed to be calibrated first before it could start taking images from space, said Science, Technology and Inno-vation Deputy Minister Fadilah Yusof. |
