Kuala Lumpur, Mon. -- The Department of Survey and Mapping (JUPEM) today launched Malaysia's first ever electronic map (e-map).

E-map, a digital cartographic multimedia interface, is part of the National Atlas Information System (NAIS) project undertaken by the department undertaken by the department under the 7th Malaysia Plan.

Packaged by Jupem in the form of CD-ROMs, e-map is available to the public for a minimal fee.

It was launched at Jupem headquarters here by Land and Co-operative Development Minister Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam simultaneously with Jupem's Open Day which runs until Wednesday.

E-map can be accessed by any user in an interactive multimedia environment with the capability of virtual exploration aided by dynamic functionality tools.

These elements ensure that the maps are presented as effectively as possible, complete with virtual reality, search functions, 360 degrees rotational views, zooming capabilities, specific scale selection, bearing identification and graphic user interface.

Users can even copy, paste or print any desired map, all at a click of the button.

The initial CD-ROM, "e-map Malaysia Version 1.0", is available to the public at RM5 each at Jupem's map sales office in Jalan Semarak here and also its State offices.
