PENANG, Wed - The Silicon Island of the east - Penang is confident of achieving the e-Government status by 2006.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon said this can be accomplished because of a RM5 million Geographic Information (GIS) software developed by the Environmental Survey Research Institute (ESRI).

GIS is already being used by the State Government to capture all geographic and data on people and electronically map the State.

"Theoretically, this will make it possible for the State to achieve the target in five years' time.

"But technically, we just need to get everybody to go on-line before we can fully implement e-Government," Koh said at the launching of the 10th ESRI South Asia User Conference 2001, at the Bayview Beach Resort here this afternoon.

Present were ESRI South Asia Group president Datuk Abdul Majid Mohamad, ESRI Inc Redlands USA sales Joel Campbell and its ESRI Asia Sdn Bhd country manager Daniel Boey.

ESRI is the sole distributor of GIS software with its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
