Source: The New Straits Times (page 2) An interactive anti-theft system for cars in Malaysia will soon be available from Audiovox Communications (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of US-based Audiovox Corporation.Manufactured by Bleutronics Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian company associated with one of Malaysia's pioneer automotive accessories company, GS Auto Accessories, it uses a combination of space age technologies to deliver a range of functions including the immobilisation of a hijacked or stolen car by using GSM phone signals, and the pinpointing a missing cars location by Global Positioning Satellite (GPS). In a world when we are offered more and more new gizmos, its interesting that the GPS-GSM based anti car-theft system is an upgrade of Bleutronics current system which has been installed in over 60,000 cars over the past five years. Known as the Posse and brand-engineered as the Skyguard Antitheft system in Honda cars, it has been proven over and over again, says KS Ho, Bleutronics managing director. We can say that more than 50 per cent of the Posse equipped cars which have been stolen have been recovered. There are many factors which can help the recovery rate. GPS draws on signals transmitted by 24 geostationary satellites launched and maintained by the United States Defence Department to provide data for the computation of latitude, longitude, altitude, date, time, ground speed and direction of moving objects. The Posse 2 system will tie in the information provided by the GPS satellite to Audiovoxs command centre at Taman Shamelin Perkasa. The Command Centre has a bank of processors running the vehicle location system. Of course, the system is limited only to areas which have GSM coverage. The command centre operates 24 hours, seven days a week, and it is a system which is proven almost daily, said Ho, pointing to a recent newspaper report which specifically singled out the Skyguard system for the swift recovery of the car, and the capture of one of the hijackers. The difference between Posse and Posse 2 is that the latter has incorporated an online tracking system via the GPS microprocessor which is built into the Posse 2 module. To activate the anti-theft function, the driver of the car calls the command centre at Audiovox Mobile Electronics in Taman Shamelin Perkasa in Cheras to report his or her car stolen. The first things they do is to track the car down. They do this to know the location of the car and whether it is mobile. The GPS system will be tracking the vehicle every second and so, if due to bad weather, it cannot transmit, then it will display the last known location. When the system is on-line again, it will update the command centre. After this process, the centre will send out an SMS message through the GSM service provider for the vehicle to flash its hazard lights. This is to warn the thief and other motorists. The next SMS will be to command the activation of an internal buzzer which is so loud that it is physically harmful if the thief does not leave the car immediately. An external siren will also sound off to alert anyone in the vicinity. The vehicles is then immobilised by cutting off the fuel pump and starter motor in stages. The car engine will then stop operating. The car is then re-traced and police called in to help recover it. This system is also equipped with a back-up battery, in case the thief decides to cut the wires. If the driver has the opportunity, a panic button is provided in the car. If he hits the button, the above described process will take place. The Posse 2 is manufactured by Bleutronics Sdn Bhd and solely distributed by Audiovox Communications (M) Sdn Bhd. This system will only be installed at the GSM Audio Sdn Bhd accessory shop in Jalan 222 Petaling Jaya.
