Source: New Straits Times Local authorities have been urged to adopt the Geographical Information System (GIS) in their management to improve services to ratepayers.Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Abu Sujak Mahmud said it was important local authorities improve their collection and information processing system. He said GIS was a way which would ensure more organized development in areas under local authorities. Speaking at the launching of the two-day GIS seminar and exhibition (LGGIS 94) at Subang Jaya, Abu Sujak said GIS would help local authorities better plan development projects. The text of his speech was read by State Local Government Department head Mohamad Izat Hassan. The seminar is jointly organized by the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ) and the Malaysian National Computer Confederation. Abu Sujak said the private sector, particularly developers, construction companies and real estate firms, would benefit greatly from the introduction of GIS in all local authorities. This is because local authorities can utilise GIS in various services like collection of assessment, maintenance of public property zoning, permits, bus transportation system, registration, public health and economic development. "They can have easy access to the information that they may need in planning." The police department, he said would also benefit from using GIS. Council president Mohamad Nor Bador said one of the key features of the GIS was in terms of data analyses. Local authorities will be able to plan development better as the GIS technology would be able to relate various factors like people, buildings, systems and services to geography.
