Telekom Malaysia Berhad expects a tougher competition in the local communications service sector this year as the players set out more aggressively to win bigger share of the market.

To maintain its leadership, the company plans to provide more innovative products and services to cater for customers who are getting more demanding and selective.

Its chief executive Datuk Dr Md Khir Abdul Rahman said with the introduction of third-generation (3G) communications services this year, the company hopes to become aggressively involved in offering consumers with advance content and good communications access.

"It is a very good technology that will enable multi-featured applications and good transmission through broadband lines. The introduction of 3G will enable Telekom Malaysia to introduce new and innovative applications for the consumers," he said at the launch of Telekom Malaysia Automatic Vehicle Location (TMAVL) service last week.

The service was developed by TM Geomatics, a division in Telekom Malaysia. It uses the global positioning system (GPS) network communications and geo-spatial system technology to monitor the location and status information of vehicles or any mobile assets from remote locations through the Internet.

When used with GPS-enabled handphones, TMAVL is able to track the mobile telephone number and its user on the location maps.

With the support from TM Cellular, TMAVL is able to tap into the Tmtouch global system for mobile communications/short messaging system (GSM/SMS) network to exploit its extensive coverage and receive location information immediately.

Md Khir also said that Telekom Malaysia will be investing further in the GPS business and the equipment used for GPS tracking.
