Geography Lesson for Selangor students PDF Print E-mail

PROJEK LEBUHRAYA Utara Selatan (PLUS) Berhad held its Geographical Information System (GIS) Day 2002 for 100 students from five secondary schools in Selangor last Saturday.

Themed Cintailah Geografi dan Alam Sekitar, the community service programme was the second such programme organised by the highway concessionaire. The first was held in 2000.

On hand to launch the event was PLUS senior general manager (human resource administration and total quality assurance department) Makhdzir Ghazali.

He said the programme was to create greater awareness among Malaysians, especially youths, about GIS and the potential benefits of this new technology is important and has potential to expand in this country," he said.

The event was witnessed by Perak Health, Science, Technology and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ho Cheng Wang and Perak Department of Environment director Noor Alshurdin Md Salleh.

The students, from SM Bukit Gading, SM Sungai Choh, SMK Seri Garing, SMK Rawang and SM Teknik Selangor, had fun learning about the system.

Besides an informative session on how the GIS technology works, a demonstration and multimedia presentation were also held on the system. Other activities included an elocution contest, treasure hunt and quiz.

There was also a Map Gallery exhibition featuring, among others, maps of the North-South Expressway, layouts of interchanges and rest and service areas.

The exhibition also showcased examples of how aerial photographs may be used together with GIS maps for better visualisation of the expressway and its facilities.

This year's event was also participated by Malaysian Centre of Remote Sensing, National Mineral and Geoscience Department and World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia.

The event, which began at 9am, ended about 5pm.
