Source: The Star Petaling Jaya: More than RM18mil in high-tech equipment and electrical appliances at a public institute were either damaged or left idle, te Auditor-General's Report revealed. The report revealed that items of IT equipment were placed on damp floors, aerial photographic equipment left idle in a corner and washing machines not used due to dry taps, at the National Land and Surveying Institute (Instun) in Behrang Ulu, Tanjong Malim. The RM135.72mil project was completed by a Class A contractor under the supervision of the Public Works Department and handed over to the then Land and Co-operative Development Ministry in 2002. Instun, which also has hostel facilities was built to provide training in land management and skills in surveying and mapping. The Auditor-General's Report pointed out that funds were wasted not only because the contractor had failed to deliver satisfactory quality of work but also due to Instun's mismanagement in acquiring supplies. As a result, RM5.48mil worth of IT equipment for Instun's publishing centre was never used because underground power cables were damaged by water seeping through the floors. The institute also owned a RM80,000 aluminium survey boat that was not used because its outboard motor was spoilt. The institute acquired a GPS receiver system that was outdated, while mapping hardware could not be used due to incompatible software.
