MAPIT MSC Bhd is targeting RM1.2 million sales by December 2005 with the launch of location maps through handphones.

"Assuming that about 50,000 customers try out this new service at RM2 per user per month, see about RM1.2 million sales," managing director Lai Chiam Ho told reporters.

The new service, codenamed MapIT, is developed using the Java language platform.

"Just press a few buttons and handphone users can find out their geographical position. Location of cafes, ATM outlets, clinics and places of interests around them can be found on a map that will be displayed on their handphone screen," he added.

Currently, MapIT digital maps is available to handphone users within the Klang Valley, but by the end of the year this new service will be available nationwide.

Lai said handphone users can configure their phone for the use of general packet radio services (GPRS), enhanced data rates for global revolution (EDGE) or the upcoming third-generation (3G) by logging on to //wap.mapit.com.my and download the application.

"The MapIT application will cost a handphone user 20 sen per information query and 30 sen per map request for this service," he added.

Last year, the group and its subsidiaries, Landsoft Sdn Bhd and Binary Intelligence Sdn Bhd, posted a revenue of RM3 million.
