Source: The Star JOHOR BARU: Transport firms should install Global Positioning System (GPS) devices to curb hijacking which resulted in RM120.6mil in cargo losses last year.Federal CID director Comm Datuk Christopher Wan Soo Kee said the device would enable the police to quickly track down hijacked or stolen lorries. To make it more effective, he said highway concessionaires should also install closed circuit cameras and floodlights to ensure safety at rest areas and lay-bys along the North-South Expressway for lorry drivers. On their part, Comm Wan said police would launch a joint campaign with the Pan Malaysian Lorry Operators Association for lorry drivers to use a special hotline (03-2262 6555/2262 7555) to report hijackings. A total of 223 lorry hijacking cases were reported last year, with 101 cases resolved and RM13.2mil worth of cargo recovered, he told reporters after a dialogue session with the association. Association president Er Sui See welcomed the suggestion on GPS, although he said the costs involved would be high. "The installation for the device is about RM4,000 and the monthly payments to the service provider is also quite high. We will discuss the matter at our association meeting next month," he added.
