Source: The Star 25 Feb 2009 THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) now has a GIS based Crime Mapping to help identify crime-prone areas. “The map outlines the crime hot spots in the city. It is one of the 23 steps outlined in the Safe City Programme,” PJ mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said during a ceremony at the MBPJ headquarters to hand over the map to the Petaling Jaya police.

Selangor deputy CID chief Asst Comm Khaw Kok Chin said with the Geographical Information System (GIS) Crime Based Mapping, the police could now increase patrolling in the critical areas to help deter crime. MBPJ town planning department director Sharipah Marhaini Syed Ali said the data would also help the council identify areas to instal CCTV cameras. “We would also know the areas that have a more urgent need for police beat bases and areas that we need to focus on in our landscape master planning,” said Sharipah. There are now 22 CCTV cameras installed around Petaling Jaya and 30 more will be installed throughout the year.
