JOHOR BAHARU, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- In a bid to help police beef up safety in Iskandar Malaysia, a Geographic Information System (GIS) will be set up in the development region.

Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said two software were given to the Johor Contingent Police from the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) to launch the system.

"We hope by using this system foreign investors will be more confident about the safety in Iskandar Malaysia and encourage them to carry out economic activities there," he said after a presentation ceremony of two GIS-equipped computers to Irda chief executive officer, Ismail Ibrahim, here Thursday.

Mohd Mokhtar said the system, which was used by several developed countries including the United States and others in Europe, would provide information on crime hotspots and help police increase surveillance in those areas.

In relation to that, he said three Community Police posts would be set up in crime-prone areas to make it easier for the public to reach the police.

"Irda and the Johor police have also agreed to put up electronic signboards displaying the police hotline number at the Johor Causeway, as well as hold forums for foreign investors to clarify any safety issues," he said.

Ismail added that efforts to install 2,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras throughout Iskandar Malaysia was also underway.
