KUALA LUMPUR: An Act is being formulated to protect the confidentiality and safety of geospatial information in the country, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said. The Deputy Prime Minister said the Act would be based on the principles of custodianship, data sharing, data integration, data dissemination and standards. He said the Act was needed to optimise the potential of geospatial technology such as the Geographic Information System (GIS). “There is an absence of an integrated database as data is collected and stored by different agencies. “Hence, the objective of the Act is to manage geospatial information as an invaluable government asset in supporting development activities,” he said when launching the 125th anniversary celebration of the Survey and Mapping Department here yesterday. Muhyiddin said the national mapping and spatial data committee had started to formulate the Act. He also paid tribute to the department’s contributions towards the country’s rapid development. “Resolving issues related to boundaries requires accurate and reliable data and the department had performed flawlessly,” he said.
