PETALING JAYA: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is in the process of completing an inventory system for the trees in the city using the geographic information system (GIS).

Mayor Datuk Mohamed Roslan Sakiman said the GIS would enable the council and the public to better monitor the trees.

The information gathered will be made available on a website, which will be accessible to all.

The council spends about RM3 million yearly to maintain the trees in the city.

"In the future, the public will be able to lodge a complaint or enquire about any activity regarding a tree, with the precise location, with the help of the GIS," said Roslan.

The system will also enable the council to keep track of activities such as tree pruning and when the tree was last fertilised.

The council had a record of 52,000 big trees, but the the city could have over 100,000 big trees, he said.

The oldest tree recorded in the city is the sepetir planted back in the 1960s in Taman Jaya park.

The council also aims to plant about 10,000 yearly with the cooperation of the public and private sectors.

The mayor also expressed his dissatisfaction with the fancy decorative lights on trees. He said the act could cause the trees to be damaged.

"These lights are hot and they could cause the tree to be 'overheated'. I understand there are such trees in front of the city council and I hope to address this soon," said the mayor.

Roslan said the council was also in the final stage of drafting the Tree and Park Bylaw. The by-law will enable better enforcement.

The mayor was speaking at the closing ceremony of Tree Handling Best Practices Based on Arboriculture Workshop recently.

The workshop had about 30 participants made up of MBPJ staff and contractors.
