KUALA LUMPUR: Cybertowers Bhd is willing and able to undertake more vehicle tracking contracts from government-related companies, said its managing director Wong Kek Wei.

"Having successfully completed the GPS tracking system and the passenger information system (PIS) for RapidPenang, we believe that we are in a position to contribute," Wong told Business Times in an interview.

Wong addmited that the company had bid for a similiar contract from RapidKL. The contract was eventually won by the privately held Itramas Corp Sdn Bhd.

A week ago, a popular blog had alleged that there was delays in the project and that cheaper solutions already implemented in Malaysia were ignored.

Itrimas group managing director Lee Choo Boo had previously told Business Times that to date some 400 RapidKL buses have been fitted with the GPS system.

Itrimas is supposed to fit some 1,500 with the system. It is believed that the contract is worth around RM20 million.

"I can't comment on the status of the project, as we are not involved. All I can say is that our bid was below RM14 million," said Wong.

He added that Cybertowers' bid was competitive because the company had already successfully implemented such a system in Penang.

"In fact, the job in Penang was the first of its kind to be undertaken in Malaysia for a mass public transport system operator. We delivered the project ahead of schedule," said Wong.

With this in mind, Wong is optimistic that Cybertowers can move forward.

"We have been in this line for more than a decade now," he said, adding that currently almost 80 per cent of Cybertower's fleet tracking division comes from the private sector.

"Our aim is to change that," said Wong. He said currently, the company is keeping itself busy with orderbooks worth around RM20 million, which should keep it busy for the next two years or so.

"We are doing fleet tracking systems for the land transport authority, as well as for some companies involved in the logistics and palm oil business," said Wong.
