The Agriculture Ministry is turning to information technology (IT) to help it monitor 19,000 hectares of padi fields in the districts of Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam.

It is embarking on an exercise to upgrade its computerised facility to further enhance its management activities, and hence help increase the productivity level of the paddy fields. The exercise will be undertaken by the agency which manages the Selangor Northeast Project (Projek Barat Laut Selangor - PBLS) paddy farming scheme.

PBLS's director Engku Mohd Afandi Engku Dalam Ahamad said a key part of the computerisation exercise is the implementation of a geographical information system (GIS) at its headquarters in Kuala Selangor to facilitate the central monitoring and controlling of activities at different locations of the paddy fields.

He added that about RM60,000 has been allocated for the GIS implementation, mainly for the purchase of hardware such as personnel computer (PCs), printers and uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems.

Engku Mohd Afandi said the exercise will also involve five farmer development centres under PBLS, which will be equipped with the new PCs.

All the PCs will be connected online through a dial-up modem, and connected to PBLS office, he told Computimes in Kuala Selangor last week.

He said at present, each centre has about one or two standalone PCs.

Engku Mohd Afandi said a tender for the contract was called recently, and 14 companies have been shorlisted.

"We will install and implement the system on our own as we have the expertise, and at the same time, we will be able to minimize the cost.

In fact, some of the project are developed in-house," he added.

According to him, the entire exercise will begin in the first quarter of next year and the GIS is expected to be running before August.

He said that for next year, a separate IT budget of RM$32,000 will be allocated for upgrading the PBLS local area network, which is connected to the Agriculture Ministry's Agrolink wide area network, from the present integrated services digital network (ISDN).
