Finland's Tekla Oy, a GIS (geographic information system) provider, said it has established a regional office in Technology Park Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.

Operating under the name Tekla (M) Sdn. Bhd, the regional unit will help raise awareness in Tekla's Spatial Information Management Systems (SIMS) solution in the region, including Japan and Australia.

It also will serve as a competency centre providing marketing and technical support for Tekla's range of industry-specific SIMS applications, and to coordinate Tekla's business in the region.

"We decided to base our competency centre in Malaysia for its strong commitment to information technology, good infrastructure, highly educated and efficient human resources, and strategic location within the region," Ari Nassi, Tekla Malaysia managing director, told In.Tech at the 4th Annual GIS conference and exhibition here last week.

Currently with a staff of four, Tekla Malaysia expects to hire up to 15 local engineers next year to provide technical competence and localize Tekla's products to regional needs.

"Many Asian companies currently use GIS for mapping, but GIS is increasingly being used for industry-specific applications," Nassi said.

According to Tekla international business development manager, Tahir Sharif, Tekla's range of SIMS products to be introduced to the region include Xcity for mapping and land use, utility, street planning and for supporting customer services; and Xpower for power utilities project management and power network designs, management and maintenance.

The company also plans to introduce Xenvi for public security and national defense planning; as well as Xsteel, which is used for 3D steelwork modeling, detailing and material listing system for the construction industry.

Other SIMS products include Xforest for forest management planning, Xcable for telephone and community television networks, and Xroad for road, street design and landscape modeling
