Telekom Malaysia Berhad plans to transform its existing telephone network into one that is prepared to invest between RM3 billion to RM4 billion a year towards this.

Datuk Wira Mohamed Said Mohammed Ali, Telekom CEO, was speaking in Kuala Lumpur on Monday at a media briefing to discuss Telekom Malaysia's local network management system (LNMS) project carried out by the company's division that handles geo-spatial technology.

Known as TM Geomatics, the division will be announcing its first geo-spatial application called The Web's Network Maps Application next month, said TM Geomatics' division head/general manager Lai Hook Kian.

He said the application will allow different groups of users to access network information from desktop computer, and users can view the detail network map and associated information while concurrently performing network analysis to support operational or management decision-making.

While fully implemented, the product is expected to benefit a number of operational units across Telekom Malaysia, thus improving the overall operational efficiency of the company, he said.

TM Geomatics is also working on another product, an online version of the Web Tourist Map and Business Directory.

A pilot project on the use of the product is currently going on in Penang and this service is expected to be available to the public free of charge in July, he added.

TM Geomatics has implemented LNMS at several sites nationwide Lai said, and its network planners at 14 main sites and four remote sites are trained to utilise the technology for planning new telecommunications networks.

He said TM Geomatics also completed a landbase conversion that will enhance the quality and accuracy of the digital landbase data for customers through investing RM1 million to acquire a global positioning system (GPS) equipment. With the GPS, he said TM Geomatics is able to ensure that all maps produced meet customers' requirements. The landbase accuracy and quality verification exercise is expected to be completed by year-end.
