SmallWorld Systems, a US-based spatial business solution provider, is keen to assist customers in the utilities sector realize the benefits of spatial resource planning (SRP).

SmallWorld Systems Pte Ltd's general manager for South Asia Dr Simpson Parn said the company offers SRP applications for the utilities sector, with a focus on electricity companies.

He was speaking at the seminar on SRP jointly organise by Abadi Commstall Sdn Bhd and the National Institute of Public Administration or Intan in Petaling Jaya last Tuesday. Parn said about 80 percent of business data relates to location, as stated by a recent research conducted by Born & Partner in Germany.

In the survey, he said Born & Partner asked utility companies to list their most important business processes. Among the processes like meter reading, customer enquiries and performing maintainance. "Of these core processes, no less than 73 percent utility companies are involved in spatial data," he said.

He added that SRP applications developed by Smallworld are used by utility companies such as United Energy and GPU in the US, Powercor and CitiPower in Australia and Statwerke Munchen in Germany.

Among the applications are Smallworld 3, Spatial Object Managers and Smallworld's SAP integration product, claimed to be the first geographical information system integration product certified by SAP.
