Source: The New Straits Times (page 1) The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) is implementing a new financial system to facilitate faster processing of various types of payment activities. The Integrated Financial System (IFS) comprises 15 applications which include Budget, Payment Account, Fixed Asset, Inventory and Stock, General Ledger, Quit Rent, Licensing, Rental and Properties, Collection and Loan. The IFS resides on a Sun server which runs Solaris, a Unix operating system. The server is connected to a local area network (LAN) which is established through unshielded twisted pair (UTP) Category 5 nodes. At present, the council has about 120 client personal computers (PCs) linked to the network, enabling MPSJ staff to gain access to an intranet. Ahmad Fuad said the IFS project draws its budget from the council's annual information technology (IT) allocation of RM4 million. MPSJ, he added, is also in the midst of developing another two new applications, namely filling of complaints and compound payments which will be integrated into the new system. The council plans to link the IFS to its Web site (http://www.mpsj.gov.my/) , which will make it accessible to the public for facilitating online payment transactions. To achieve this, MPSJ will use the budget allocation to enhance the Web site to accommodate the plan. Currently, the Web site only features basic and general information about MPSJ, and the plan is to make it more interactive and be able to support more information about the council's core business as well as the services offered. According to him, MPSJ has also allocated a certain amount from the annual IT budget for implementing its geographic information system (GIS) project which is now 80 per cent completed. Ahmad Fuad said the IT exercise will provide the council with concise online information and data on Subang Jaya for a more systematic planning and better town management. The GIS system, he added, will also play an integral part in assisting MPSJ to undertake steps to address the squatter problem within the municipality. Another IT project in the pipeline is the council's LAN upgrade exercise and implementation of a wide area network (WAN) connection to link MPSJ with its branch offices in Puchong and Seri Kembangan.
