The Land and Cooperative Development Ministry has awarded New Technology and Innovation Sdn Bhd (NTI) a RM15 million contract to upgrade the computer-assisted mapping systems (CAMS) being used by the Survey and Mapping Department.

With the investment, the Ministry is extending its 12-year relationship with NTI and its strategic partner Sysdeco, a Norwegian supplier of mapping systems which implemented the existing CAMS in 1998.

The system produces digitised topographic map series in various scales for civil and military purposes. NTI's executive director Jamalluddin Ismail said the company's solution for the CAMS upgrade is designed to effectively deal with the increased demands of digital topographic data. It will improve the system, allowing for better balance of simplicity, power, efficiency and flexibility.

The new upgrade contract covers the supply, delivery, installation, testing and commisioning of Alpha Open MVS servers and workstations, Dell microcomputers, Sysdeco software modules and specialised mapping equipment. Training and two-year maintainance of the total solution systems is also included.

Upgrading of CAMS is expected to be done within the shortest period and in parallel with existing production.

Scheduled to minimise interruption to the map production processes in the department, the implementation strategy will also speed up the production, increase data accuracy and allow for the creation of geographical information system (GIS)-ready data, said NTI.

In addition, system scalability, growth and Year 2000 (Y2K)-related issues will be addressed.
