RECOM System Integration Sdn Bhd has introduced a locally-developed satellite vehicle tracking system with world's standard equipment. The Accu Track 2000 system uses a combination of global system for mobile communications (GSM) network and the US Department of Defence Navigation Satellite geographical positioning system called the Navstar GPS satellites.

The communications network and satellites are used to track and receive position information of a fleet of vehicles or individual vehicle with user-friendly VTS graphic/map software interface in real-time.

According to Recom System's general manager Raymond Y.W. Chong, the system has been designed with a lot of useful features that not only allow users to locate their cars but also issue commands such as switching off the engine, sounding the alarm during emergencies and switching on the signal light to attract attention.

The AccuTrack 2000 system consists of an AVLS, a digital phone line and a software. The ALVS hardware is installed in a vehicle. Signals from the satellites will be processed by its AccuTrack GPS 12 channel processor to determine the latitude and longitude position of the vehicle.

The data is then transmitted through the GSM telephone network to the tracking centre and users will be able to see their vehicles' positions on a map. The AVLS can be programmed to store GPS data in its internal memories and these GPS location data can be retrieved or downloaded later. For this function, users can determine the time interval recording of the GPS data.

The AVLS is remotely controlled from the Tracking Centre and the user's handphone SMS command to activate the relay, therefore allowing the hardware to either switch off the engine, sound the alarm or switch on the signal light.

The AVLS unit is powered by a nickel cadmium (NiCd) rechargeable battery which is able to operate for another six to seven hours even after the power is switched off.

The tracking system works only when there is a GSM coverage. If there is none, users will not be able to lock into the system remotely and track down a vehicle.

For mapping function, Recom offers the AccuTrack 2000 software which allows users to remotely re-program the username and password, the pre-determined broadcast emergency number, and the GSM SMS centre number from a computer.

"At the moment, we are also the tracking centre for our clients. The charge is only RM10 per call," Chong explained.

"The system can use any digital mobile phone reception available in the market, either GSM or personal computer network (PCN)-based." Recom System's technical consultant Yin Kean Meng said.

However, Celcom Berhad is the only telecommunications company currently offering a RM30 access fee for this type of service. The company aims to sell 10,000 units by the end of the year. Installation costs are RM4,000 and the software is priced at RM1,500.
