Town and Country Planning director Azizudin Alias said the objective of the seminar was to create greater awareness of the importance of Geographic Information System (GIS) and IT in Ipoh's management and development.

A GIS is used to help in the planning development of Ipoh and the whole state of Perak.

With such a system, the Town Planning Department would be able to speed up its planning process, he said, but added that all departments would have access to data in a GIS.

Currently, the Evaluation Department, Planning Department, Parks and Recreation Department and the Land Office are using GIS technologies.

Jaslina Shaidin, a town planner at Ipoh, said that local authorities intend to use GIS technology to boost the tourism, transportation and housing industries by the end of this year.
